UNESCO has added several international monuments to its World Heritage List. They include a Hindu temple in Cambodia, monasteries converted into forts in Iran and a former slave refuge in Mauritius. The archaeological excavations at Al-Hijr in Saudi Arabia and the 17th century French defence works of Sebastien de Vauban, a general who served under Louis 14th, have also been added to the prestigious list.

The World Heritage List contains 862 sites in more than 140 countries. It catalogues, names, and conserves sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity.

The Netherlands is home to seven of those sites. They include the windmills at Kinderdijk and the Stelling of Amsterdam, a 135-kilometre line of defences built around the city between 1885 and 1914.
